in una notte di tempesta, una giovane donna sconosciuta mette al mondo un bimbo in un ospizio e muore. allevato con molti altri trovatelli, il piccolo, cui e'' stato imposto il nome di oliver twist, viene messo a lavorare presso un fabbricante di bare. maltrattato e percosso, oliver scappa, a piedi, a londra. qui si imbranca con altri ragazzi: sono dei ladruncoli che fanno capo ad un vecchio ebreo. benche' innocente, oliver viene arrestato, mentre i ladruncoli riescono a fuggire. liberato in seguito ad una testimonianza favorevole, viene accolto in casa da un vecchio signore facoltoso. il vecchio ebreo, temendo le rivelazioni di oliver, lo fa rapire; ma il suo protettore, mediante un avviso, riesce a mettersi in contatto con l'amica di un complice del vecchio ebreo. la ragazza rivela la verita'; ma il malvivente, per vendicarsi, l'uccide. egli si rifugia nella tana dell'ebreo, dove viene ucciso dalla folla inferocita, mentre l'ebreo viene catturato. oliver viene consegnato al suo vecchio protettore, il quale scopre che il ragazzo e' suo nipote. la povera donna disperata, che e' morta dandolo alla luce, era la figlia del vecchio signore.
